12-2A Division II Mid Year Review

The Eagles will be crowned champions of District 12-2A Division II....Just not sure which ones.  This extremely competitive district had several teams coming into district undefeated.  While it is still early, it looks like a two team race between Rogers and Lexington for the title, with several others punching it out for the final playoff spot.

Heavyweights
Rogers and Lexington have had some classic battles over the years, including a playoff match up a few years ago at Floyd Casey Stadium that saw Lexington get the better of Rogers.  This year's championship will likely be decided on November 5, at Merk Field as the two squads face off in the last regular season game of the year.  Rogers is undefeated and has scored some impressive wins over several good teams including then Class A #1 Mart, Franklin, and Troy.  As has been the case every year since the arrival of Coach Jeff Walker, the Eagles improve every week in their execution of Walker's slot-t offense.  Walker seems more willing to pass a kidney stone than the football, but the Eagles lead the area in offense and their relentless execution of the slot-t seems to always break the opponent in the second half. The season ending loss FB Cody Weir will hurt the Eagles ground game.  Lexington, as has been the case in recent years, is very heavy on talent with the likes of RB Xavier Ward, QB Kogan Garrett, Chase and Chance Sherrill.  Going back to his days on Terry Cron's staff at Mart, Coach Jason Holcomb understands how to ride the horses.  They have a balanced offensive attack and a defense the has made opponents look helpless at times.
Bottom Line:  Never bet against a disciplined fighter with a mean punch...Rogers KO's Lexington on their home turf to take the crown and both make a decent run in the Region 3 playoffs.

Middleweights
Rosebud-Lott, Thorndale, and Franklin are the three teams vying for the last playoff spot in the district.  Franklin seemed to be the clear cut favorite until Rogers thumped them at Franklin in the district opener.  Thorndale, on the other hand, lost to Rogers in a very close game that was quite a shootout in Week 2.  Rosebud-Lott, seemed to have righted themselves after the season ending loss of QB Riley Edwards to an injury, but were hammered at home by Lexington in their district opener.  Each team has a collection of athletes that will make this one go to the judges.
Bottom Line:  Franklin's ability to run and Thorndale's lack of ability to stop it mean the Lions move on to playoffs for a short stay.

Flyweights
Jarrell and Bruceville-Eddy are already playing out the string in the district race.  While both are great communities with great people, they are simply bringing a knife to a gunfight in 2010.  Credit Bruceville-Eddy for having the guts to take on Daingerfield in a pre-district game in Corsicana and living to tell about it.
Bottom Line:  Take a dive and save yourself for Basketball, Baseball, Ag, One Act Play....
